Earth Day Scavenger Hunt for BC Elementary School Classrooms

This Earth Day, Thursday April 22, 2010, between 9am and 2pm, EcoBuddies is challenging BC Elementary School classrooms to a Scavenger Hunt that focuses on Endangered Animals! Use one or several computers to log into EcoBuddies (www.ecobuddies.com) with your classroom and search the green-inspired world of EcoBuddies for answers to the clues listed below. Teachers, please email your answers to support@ecobuddies.com with the name of your school and grade of your class.

FIRST PRIZE: The classroom that emails the correct answers to the clues first will get a $150 gift certificate to a bookstore of their choice!

SECOND PRIZE: The classroom that correctly answers the clues in second place will receive a $50 gift certificate to a bookstore of their choice!

PARTICIPATION PRIZE: Each classroom that participates will get EcoBuddies posters and stickers for their classroom.

Answers to the clues will be distributed throughout the EcoBuddies world on April 22, 2010 (not before this date). Look for the animals that match the clues, click on the animal, and get the information needed to answer the clue. Note: For time's sake, no answers will be in the Eco-Explorer's Hut due to the large amount of school content classroom's would have to go through within the hut.

Penguins are amazing creatures! Here are some awesome facts about them!

1. Penguins spend half of their life in the ocean!
2. In 25 mya (like, a long time ago, like THOUSANDS of years ago) there were 5 foot penguins! Ah!
3. Both mom and dad penguins take care of baby chicks, keeping them warm and snuggled in a pouch by their feet.
3. When penguins are swimming in the water they move like birds flying through the air- this shows how amazing and graceful they are as swimmers!

PENNIES FOR PANDAS: A GREAT WAY TO SUPPORT PANDAS

WOW! CHECK OUT WHAT THIS SUPER COOL SCHOOL DID TO HELP PANDAS!

Students and staff members at Sky Vista Middle School have raised more than $1,200 in pennies for the Pennies 4 Pandas program, which benefits the endangered giant panda. The money will be used to replant bamboo forests in China which were destroyed by the May 2008 earthquake. Bamboo is the giant panda’s primary food source.

Sixth-grader Dylan Hobson brought in 7,000 pennies by himself!

“It made me feel really good because I knew I was making a difference in the world,” said Hobson. “It took a while though. I had two backpacks full of pennies and they were so heavy!”

Eighth-grader Kiana Mun-Williams said she learned that giant pandas are an important part of the earth’s ecosystem and was glad to help them.

“Pandas are adorable and we don’t need anymore extinct animals,” Mun-Williams said. “We worked as a team and had fun.”

BUNNY'S FOR MOLLY4

Yay! The animal of the week is Bunnies! Bunnies are awesome! Did you know that Bunnies live in underground tunnels called warrens. The warrens have areas where bunnies can keep their babies, go to the bathroom, and sleep.

Moms grow their fur out so that it is very fluffy just before they have their bunnies and then carefully pull out some of this fur to make soft warm bedding for their babies.

A cool bunny fact is that Jackrabbits can jump up to 20 feet and run 30-35 miles per hour- wowow!

Bunnies warn each other of danger by thumping their feet, as well as motioning with their tails to show if they are scared, happy, or excited.

A TORTIOSE FOR COMBA!

Comba Womba has a tortoise named Tommy! I wonder if he is big or small. If it is a big one, Comba must have a HUGE tank.

Tortoises are reptiles that live on land. They can be tiny or very large- up to 2 meters long! Tortoises are very reclusive, which means they are not social creatures. Baby tortoises are called hatchlings and use something called an 'egg tooth' to break out of their shells.

The lifespan of tortoises are comparable to the lifespan of humans although some live much longer. The oldest tortoise to ever live was one that was given to Captain Cook in 1777 when it was just a baby. His name was Tu'i Malila and he lived to be 188 years old- WOW! He lived longer than Captain Cook!

Tortoises are pretty cool, hey?

Animal of the Week: Kittens!

As promised to Queen Fuzzbally of EcoBuddies, the animal of the week is kittens! Can you believe that cat moms have 2-3 litters of kittens per year and 1-8 kittens per litter? Wow! This means a cat mom has about 100 kittens in her lifetime. That's a lot of kitties to care for!

The cat with the most kittens was a mom called Dusty who had 480 kittens in her lifetime! Wow!

One of the most amazing cats was from Argentina. Her name was Mincho and she climbed up a tree and lived there for 6 years, never coming down the tree! She had three litters of kittens even while living in the tree... WOW!

Kittens begin dreaming at one week old. Their eye color begins changing as they grow older. Kittens cannot see or hear when they are born. They begin to open their eyes at 5 days old and their hearing and vision develop after 2 weeks.

A group of kittens is called a kindle- cute!

If any Buddies want to send me a picture of their kitten or cat I will post it on this blog, ok?

Waste Reduction Week: Ocotber 19 to 25

Wow! It is waste reduction week! October 19 to the 25th! So what does that mean? It means that this is a great week to think about how you can care for our planet, as well as how to reduce the amount of garbage you create!

One of the things I thought about this week was how to reduce the amount of garbage I create from all the stuff in my lunch box. My mom usually gives me a granola bar that comes in a wrapper, a juice box, a sandwich wrapped in tinfoil, and an apple. We decided together that we would make some changes this week so my lunch created less waste. Now we are baking cookies to replace the granola bar so that we don't use extra wrappers and we are using reusable containers for my juice, sandwich, apple and cookies. Yeah!

I feel pretty happy!

I wonder what this jumping spider is thinking... Maybe that he wishes he had a costume on EcoBuddies- lol! Let's tell Jumbles to make one, ok?

Did you know jumping spiders do not make webs to catch their prey, but run and jump after them. A spider like this will jump and bite its prey in the air- wow! These spiders can jump 20-80 times the length of their bodies!

I really like these spiders because they are soooo cool looking. They have SUCH hairy legs! These hairs help them to climb tons of different terrains. For example, some of these spiders live even on the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Can you believe it?

Also, like the coolest thing about these spiders are that they are very curious creatures. Instead of hiding or playing dead when they see a human, they get excited and will jump toward the human and even sometimes jump on a person's hand to take a closer look. Hilarious, hey?

All About the Fen Raft Spider

I just happen to love spiders. Especially the Fen Raft Spider, which is a very endangered spider. These spiders live in Britain (have any EcoBuddies fans in Britain seen these spiders? Let me know!) and live on the water. You know those spiders that zoom past you when you are swimming in a river? These spiders are like that. I think these spiders are awesome because the mom fen raft spiders carry their egg sacs underneath them for a few weeks when they are about to have babies. They are quite big egg sacs and I think they must be very strong to carry them for so long. Every so often they dip the eggs sacs in the water to keep them moist. Cool hey?

Here is a trivia question for you: How long does it take for a fen raft spider to become an adult?

You got it! This is a very rare picture of a mom with her newly hatched spiderlings!

I want to tell you some quick facts about the spiders we are voting on this month. We are voting for spiders because, hey, we're all starting school soon and we need some extra fun. AND SPIDERS ARE AWESOME!!! I will start with our first two and then post about the third spider later today, kk?:

Kauai Cave Wolf Spiders
WHY THEY ARE AWESOME: These spiders live in lava tubes in Kauia, Hawaii. They are cave hunters and have adapted so well to the dark cave environment that they are the only wolf spider that have no eyes. Kauai Cave Wolf Spiders use their fangs to kill their prey, which are small shrimp-like crustaceans called Amphipods. Both the Kauai Cave Wolf Spiders and the Amphipods have babies very slowly, so any negative change within their habitat makes it hard for them to survive because they do not have large populations. In fact, these spiders have only been found in 4-6 caves.
WHY THEY ARE ENDANGERED: The Kauai Cave Wolf Spider is endangered because of habitat destruction. Their caves are being destroyed through construction and the use of pesticides, as these actions really hurt their habitats.

Spruce Fir Moss Spiders
WHY THEY ARE AWESOME: They are the smallest tarantula out there and measure 0.10 to 0.15 inches which is about the size of two typed Bs put together- BB. They can only live on moss mats under a spruce-fir forest, which makes me think that each Spruce Fir Spider has a little mossy bed- lol.
WHY THEY ARE ENDANGERED: Well, there is an insect called the Adelgid, which sadly destroys the Spruce Fir Moss Spiders' habitat. More so though, logging has really hurt this spider's chance at survival.

we have adopted Rory, a beautiful tiger cub that is being protected by the Sumatran Tiger Trust. The money raised will ensure that Rory and other Sumatran Tigers are kept safe in their habitats. Doesn't Rory look like such a strong and healthy tiger? I love him!
The Sumatran Tiger Trust is an organization that focuses on ensuring that Sumatran Tigers are safe in the wild through keeping their habitats safe from logging, development, and poaching. The Tiger Trust also helps researchers to study the tigers in their natural environment, so that we know how to keep them safe. Quick Tips: Saving Water

It seems like the water that we use at home can never run out, but it's actually a lot of work to get it to your tap. Some of the ways we get water, such as redirecting rivers, can be very harsh on the environment. That's why it's always important to conserve the water we use. Here's a quick tip. When you brush your teeth, do you let the faucet run? Instead, try to only turn on the tap to wet your toothbrush and when you rinse it off. It may seem like you're not helping, but if everybody makes small changes it can make a big difference!

Tigers for Silver Stream!

Silver Stream is right! Tigers are so amazing. Did you know that they have stripes for camouflage and that no two tigers have the same markings on their fur? Tiger's tails are three to four feet long and help them to balance when they make a sharp turn while running. I think the funniest thing about tigers is that their paw prints are called pug marks. Hee hee.
Tigers eat as much as 40 pounds of meat in one sitting. Whoa! But if they eat a lot in one sitting they will not eat for a few days.
Tiger's have about 2-3 cubs at a time. They are born blind and weigh about 2 pounds each. It takes about 18 months until they are ready to make their first kill.
Tigers live all over Asia and are an endangered species. This is because people kill them for their fur and also because their habitats (a habitat is the place where they live) are being ruined by people who take the trees and food away that surround their homes.
We should do everything we can to help tigers! They are so beautiful and fuzzy. Have any of you ever seen one in real life?

OH SO CUTE ORANGUTAN

This is one of my favorite baby animals in the world. It is a baby orangutan. I love them so much. I saw one in real life once in San Diego at a zoo and it was amazing! I also like Bonobo Monkeys- they are hilarious!
Anyhow, orangutan babies, their moms, and dads are found on the islands of Sumatra and Borneo. They are the largest tree dwelling mammal in the world and make nests high up in trees.
Baby orangutans have the longest childhood dependence on their moms- they drink their moms milk until they are 6 years old!
I am sad because orangutans are losing their habitat. They are supposed to be extinct in the wild in 10 years.
Maybe we can do something to help them though. What do you think we should do?

Killer whales must have it tough. They are totally misunderstood. It's too bad they're called "killer", because they are actually super friendly. In fact, it's people who are killing them by letting chemicals get into the water they swim in. Did you know that they are related to dolphins? Just like dolphins, killer whales are super smart! Can anybody tell me another name for killer whales?

How To: Save Energy at Home

Did you know that you can help the environment from the comfort of your own home? Here are some ideas:

-Turn off the lights in your room when you're not using them.
-Take shorter showers
-Don't leave the fridge door open too long.
-Make sure that you turn off you faucets all the way (a single dripping faucet can add up to gallons of wasted water).
-Shut off your computer at night (and when you're not playing on Ecobuddies!)

Doesn't that seem easy? These ideas may seem so small, but it's the little things that add up to make a big difference!

Green Tip: Unplug Your Cell Phone Charger

How many of you use cell phones? Do you always leave your cell phone charger plugged in? According to treehugger.com, only 5% of the power that a charger draws from your outlet is actually used to power your cell phone. If you leave you charger plugged in all the time, that adds up to a lot of wasted energy. Much of energy we use today is created by the harmful burning of fossil fuels. So next time you unplug your cell phone, help the environment by unplugging your charger from the wall as well!

HIPPOS WOW! THIS INFO IS HIPPOTASTIC!

There are SO many cool things about Hippos. I love them because they live in and out of the water and because they are related to WHALES! You heard me! Whales and porpoises are Hippopotamus' closest living relatives. Cool, hey?

Hippos are also the third largest land mammal in the world. Despite their size though they can easily outrun humans. I wonder if they can outrun cheetahs though. What do you think?

Hippos live in herds with 5 to 30 other Hippos. One of the names for these herds is a 'bloat'. Funny, hey?

Hippos are endangered as they are threatened by poachers and because of changes in their environment. This is why it is important for all of us Buddies to talk about why we should take care of Hippos.

Hello, It's me Violet. I have been thinking about sharks a lot because they are my favorite animal in the world. Did you know the larger the shark, the more gentle they are usually? The very large sharks eat something called plankton, which I have heard is very small. That is pretty neat I think because people are so scared of them. LOL!

1. The ocean covers like 71% of the earth's surface.
2. There are 1.5 million or more kinds of fish in the ocean.

4. Sharks are not as dangerous as people think. Most of them are too small or scared to hurt people. Like 80% of them I read.

My name is Violet! Many of you probably have seen me at the dance studio on Tiki Island! Other than dancing, I LOVE to study how to be green. You know, because I want to be a marine biologist when I grow up! I love the ocean and I love animals!
